With half of her face missing it's almost impossible to see the young woman as anything other than damaged, broken and perhaps too far gone for repair. Through the process of conservation and restoration we're able to undo that damage, return her to a proud state, enable the artist's vision to reign; work that results in lifting the veil.

Restoring A Torn Oval Portrait ASMR
Переглядів 59 тис.14 днів тому
There's something about the preciousness, innocence and pure joy (in between bouts of hysterical madness and nerve wracking fury) about the early years of childhood. Something fleeting and intangible like the wind; able to stand one's hairs upon end and yet gone before we can quantify it. Captured in oil on canvas yet pierced with a wretched tear this painting was once, and will be again a test...

"Verboten" is pronounced "Ferboten" 🙂
I like this youtube channel. Your work is amazing !
the face is not working~~ too flat
Halooo! Another adventure begins! With calming, soothing Satie. 4:43 question: water to clean this grimy canvas- do you use distilled water? Considering tap water varies from place to place: chlorination, fluoridation, etc. Question 2: I think of the different videos of your’s I’ve watched, you have been fixing oil paintings. Do you ever restore tempera or acrylic paintings? I ask because I wonder how you match colour for colour if the pigment dries darker after it dries? I thought that happens with tempera paint. Lastly, I really really like your Bonus- the “intro” of your client’s voice explaining, describing, hoping and the “outro” hearing their smiles of relief, pleasure, and (always deserved) admiration.
Does the fish glue smell bad?
Life is very lazy. When life finds a way to do something without effort, it does that. Whenever we create a technology we lose the ability to do what that technology does. My usual go to example is that prior to mobile phones being a thing, everyone could remember dozens of numbers accurately. After mobile phones, that concept is just gone. However, those of use who can recall a time before mobile phones are becoming thin on the ground, so, instead... There are people, plenty of them, out there who have largely lost the ability to parse spoken language. They routinely watch movies and TV with the subtitles switched on. I've been exploring why and it is now obvious - they don't know what is being said without them. Their language centers have become locked on text. What's that going to mean? I do not know, but it is horrifying. You are in a creative adjacent industry and yet you're promoting AI solutions in that field. What do you think will happen when our computers are doing our creative thinking for us? Well, what we see is that we will lose that ability as well. There will not be anyone one hundred years from now re-re-conserving your piece because no one is going to care. No one will be able to recognise the skillsets required to create the piece as they will all have been lost. They'll just order a suitable replacement from omnizon and expect it to be there shortly afterwards. It'll be shit, though, because Ai quickly becomes self-referential, and so quickly becomes only 66% perfect. Maybe it's inevitable, but it is sad to see someone promoting the destruction of their own craft.
You did good!
What is the name of the piano song guys I totally forgot it ? I’m looking for the violin version 🤌
This is awesome. I have old mirrors and two huge 1800s frames with my great great grandparents in them that all have damage. Seeing that there are people that know the craft gives me hope they can be repaired someday.
Borrow, or steal? I like to call it inspiration!
👏👏👏👏
Oh man…I wanted to see you clean the frame
Did you file a patent for the table?
Amazing
This was amazing to see
poppy is for sure quite necessary!!
Wonderful
Amazing as always.
Wonderful pair of videos. I do have a kind question to ask. Are your stretchers raw wood, or have they been sealed in any fashion to prevent the canvas from being "wood burned" or "stretcher burned?"
"Unified Sheen", one of the lesser known Estévez brothers ?
is the fish gelatin smelly?
does jello smell like pig feet?
Try Dovo or Kai scissors. They may not dull as fast as Ginger scissors. I own all three brands and find each one works differently on different fabrics. Karen Kay Buckley also makes serrated scissors that are excellent.
Incredible range of skills, thank you
Looks like the sun has finally risen up after years of smog.
Genuinely some of the best retouching I've ever seen you do Julian. Truly amazing.
Looks like the "restorator's" reality was heavily confused by all this tiktok image filters everybody loves nowadays
I often wonder if you have experienced any strange reactions due to toxic pigments. I enjoy watching A Brush with Bekah and her reviews of historic paint ingredients.
Thanks for part 2. 👌 What a revelation! 👍😊 I wonder how you would go about a painting not having such a bulk layer of paint, not being able to take it off its original canvas? Because this painting is really very thick and sturdy, you could take it off the canvas! Often, restoration is done on it's original canvas. To keep as much as possible of the work. Thanks for a reply. 🙂
Thanks for this video. 👌So much meticulous work... Is part two on YT, already ? Looking forward to see how the rest was done, and the face! Take care.
There is no way that was not intentionally done that way. Guessing the other restoration was to "remove all cracks in the painting", which would require painting the entire thing. Abysmal.
J'admire les personnes comme vous qui redonnent vie a une oeuvre par leur travail. Vous avez de l'or dans les mains .
I like this where the owner of the painting gives the history of the piece. And, I like how we actually know who the subject of the painting is as well! So many paintings you have no idea who the artist is or who the subject is.
Filistini unutma 🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸
FİLİSTİNDE KATLEDİLEN ÇOCUKLARİDA HATİRLA🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸
Is there a big difference between washy cozo (sorry for misspelling) and mulberry paper?? Or is it the same thing? Just can be called both names?
i’ve always wondered, what kind of music do you listen to when painting or conserving? or do you prefer audiobooks or silence?
Every time I watch your videos I get a range of emotions. At first when you apply your first layer of paint I grimace and think, what’s he done?!! That stands out so much! But then you go over it with a different shade and BANG! The damage has gone, you sir are a witch and what you do is witchcraft! Amazing
9:48 who else thought the green was part of the painting?
This guy sounds like Patrick from Polygon
I could watch you do the retouching for hours.
We are not worthy! Magical!
It is no exaggeration to say the world owes you and your profession a great debt. Thank you for letting us peak over your shoulder for a while.
Does someone know the music at 23:23 ?
Does fish gelatin smell fishy?..
Lovely work as always, Mr. Baumgartner.
She looks like the period dramas we get with full makeup looks and bad textiles that are not period accurate.
damn hes getting fast! 16:50 he did that retouching in under 2 minutes, it was so fast he had to slow it down and add a frame counter 💀💀💀💀💀
What is the name of the song in the middle of the video? Starts around 11:47.
